Happy Halloween 2018

No, I was not dressed as Moses, although I can understand if the big shepherd’s staff would throw you. After being the devil for Halloween last year, I decided to do something different for a variety of reasons. 2 or 3 guys dress up like Jesus every year when I attend NY Comic Con. That’s right. Superman, Batman, Spiderman, and Jesus could be seen at one event. I’ve also started occasionally reading the Bible. The political positions of some Christian voters concerning refugees make even less sense after reading the book of Matthew.

You would think it would be a very simple costume to make, but it wasn’t. Since I am not a tailor, I ordered a white throbe, a piece of Middle Eastern clothing, from Amazon after searching several sites. The red cloth didn’t drape properly with my first choice of fabric. This meant buying another bit of cloth and crudely tailoring it to hang the way I wanted. And then there was the hair. A short bob of straight hair would be great if I was trying to be Ike Turner, otherwise it was going to be dreadlocks. Most of the choices were cheap looking and made to be humorous, but I finally found something appropriate. The shepherd’s staff was a broomstick with molded plastic attached to the end. I made it for symbolic reasons and because I refuse to run around in costume on Halloween in New York City without some means of defending myself. It just seemed cheesy to make a halo. The streets are too nasty and the weather too cold to wear sandals, so I chose white sneakers and pants.

Afro Punk 2017

Image

Although it was good to spend another sunny birthday at this funky music festival, there were some initial wrinkles. I was unable to use the more convenient entrance. Everyone was forced to walk around the park to another location. When we finally got ready to enter after a long wait, a guard said I couldn’t enter with my backpack. Bullshit. Stuffing everything inside another bag did the trick. But the inconvenience was worth it for two days of concerts WITHOUT lip sinking.

My personal lineup included Thundercat, Blitz the Ambassador, and Anderson Paak. The bone rattling base of the speakers, blaring horn sections, and lively crowd were energizing. In between sets, the DJs kept the party going, prompting many to dance wildly in the sun. Taking pics of the colorful outfits kind of reminded me of shooting around NY Comic Con. Except NYCC attendees were less partial to nipple piercing.

I was excited to see Anderson Paak, but it was still quite an endurance contest. Everyone stood in place crammed together for more than 2 hours, including a set by Dizzee Rascal. Someone in the crowd fainted during their set. They immediately stopped the music, resuming only after the person was helped out. Anderson Paak’s live drumming, singing, and rapping helped everyone not only endure, but roar with excitement. Talib Kweli was an unexpected special guest. I limped home completely satisfied. You can see my pics here.

This is Michael and Laura Allred. Michael is the fantastic comic book creator of “Madman” and an artist on many more works, including “iZombie”. Laura is his wife, colorist, and long time collaborator. They both had a panel at a past comic book convention.

The first question concerned how Michael and Laura met in college. When Michael was boarding a bus to go to his apartment, he suddenly locked eyes with “the most beautiful girl in the world.” They were mutually entranced while they passed each other. As the bus pulled away, he chided himself for not talking to her.

Later at his apartment, he heard a knock at the door. When he opened the door there were two women. The woman in front asked to see his roommate. She was directed to the roommate’s bedroom leaving him face to face once again with “the most beautiful girl in the world.” He asked her if she wanted to go for a walk and she obliged. 30 years later they have 4 grandchildren.

The live action version of iZombie, the work he co-created, will be in it’s third season on the WB.

The gangs all here

dorseywright_co1 I decided to attend Wintercon 2016 as Alex from the movie “A Clockwork Orange”, repeating the outfit I wore on Halloween. It was a definite change to stand in front of the camera instead of taking pictures of other participants like I usually do. While wondering through the celebrity section, I hear someone enthusiastically yell “Clockwork Orange”! It was Dorsey Wright, known for his role in the fantastic 70s movie “The Warriors”. He said he appreciated the balls it took to wear the outfit.

New York Comic Con 2016

supermanAnother exhausting marathon of geek culture has come to an end. Getting up at 7:00 every morning ensured easy entry, except for Friday when security insisted we empty everything out of our pockets and put the contents in our bags.

The panel for one of my favorite shows, Humans, was very enjoyable. A plague of human sentience will break out among random androids all over the world next season, sowing fears of a robotic revolution. Anita, one of the leading androids from last season, may get romantically involved with a human. It was funny to see Joe the adulterous father in person. I thought he looked different than on TV, but my wife disagrees.

The long walk from Javits to Madison Square Garden was rewarded with an interview with Planet of the Apes motion capture actor Andy Serkis and a clip from the third movie, War for the Planet of the Apes. He sees his brand of acting as the future. Although I wouldn’t go that far, the CGI techniques for generating apes from human performances is amazing. Also Woody Harrelson will be the main human protagonist. Epic or disaster? I lean toward epic.

There were other panels, great cosplay, and many unusual sights to keep me occupied. Even the overpriced Javits food couldn’t spoil my enthusiasm. You can see more of my pictures HERE.

Afro Punk Brooklyn 2016

1256x497_slider_pic_afropunkI decided to celebrate my birthday by attending Afro Punk Brooklyn, two days of music and fun on Saturday August 27 thru Sunday August 28. Being unfamiliar with most of the acts, my preparation began weeks before when I browsed most of the musicians on iTunes. The festival was held in Commodore Barry Park in Brooklyn, NY. There were four stages: green, red, black, and gold. Unfortunately, the green stage sat in a virtual dust bowl of sparse dead grass and dirt which set off my allergies. But I was able to have a good time anyway. Continue Reading →

Scenes from last year’s NY Comic Con

I recently acquired the magic ticket, or more accurately pass, to this year’s New York Comic Con. I’ve been attending the event since it began when it was much smaller. It’s expansion and increased commercialization has it’s good and bad points. The insane crowds can be a definite minus, although it gives the convention the clout to get big name TV and movie personalities to come. Continue Reading →
