Leap into Spring! Eventually.

This ancient symbol of fertility has come to represent the delight of Easter for millions of children. The eggs they lay in myth are meant to symbolize rebirth. Because of their fecundity, people have imagined rabbits to be a harbinger of Spring, a time when nature reawakens.

Red, black, and green are the colors of Marcus Garvey’s famous Universal African flag, created to symbolize the connection between African and African descended people. Red stands for the blood that must be shed to liberate a people. Black represents the people themselves. Green originally symbolized the abundant natural wealth of Africa’s land, but can now represent wealth in general.

Just another wedge issue?

Caitlyn Jenner

Caitlyn Jenner, a possible candidate for governor of California, has recently said that she believes it is unfair for transgendered athletes to compete with females. Is this viewpoint based upon any credible scientific studies or is this another wedge issue being used to energize the campaigns of a politicians? After years of opposing Title IX, the Civil Rights law created to expand women’s sports, Republicans are now suddenly concerned about female athletes? I would like to see some objective proof before getting exercised about this subject. Do those transitioning from male to female really have an advantage over female athletes after hormone treatments and puberty blockers? They used to have hearings and do research before making laws. Now we make assumptions.

Plus I can see states using these laws to harass women who look more masculine. In fact, 2 female athletes were barred from Olympic competition for having too much naturally occurring testosterone.

Vessel, the large public sculpture in the new Hudson Yards development, has 16 stories with 2,500 steps for people to climb. It should have been called Stair Master instead. Or perhaps Wastebasket would be a good title since Hudson Yards is a place where taxpayers have thrown away billions of dollars in subsidies to give wealthy elites someplace to live and play.

What is the anger of God?
We are told it is in the flood, or the storm.
Insurance men say that these are God’s acts, against which we are unprotected.

But that is the irrational side speaking.
The rational side – science – says it was our doing after all.
We poisoned the air.
We boiled the sea and filled it up with plastic.
We decided hating each other was more vital than saving each other.

We were given a miracle world, and we broke it. Perhaps we thought God would give us another.
It won’t work that way.
What is God’s anger?
God’s face turning away.
Leaving us alone with what we’ve done.
