Love illustrated

This is Michael and Laura Allred. Michael is the fantastic comic book creator of “Madman” and an artist on many more works, including “iZombie”. Laura is his wife, colorist, and long time collaborator. They both had a panel at a past comic book convention.

The first question concerned how Michael and Laura met in college. When Michael was boarding a bus to go to his apartment, he suddenly locked eyes with “the most beautiful girl in the world.” They were mutually entranced while they passed each other. As the bus pulled away, he chided himself for not talking to her.

Later at his apartment, he heard a knock at the door. When he opened the door there were two women. The woman in front asked to see his roommate. She was directed to the roommate’s bedroom leaving him face to face once again with “the most beautiful girl in the world.” He asked her if she wanted to go for a walk and she obliged. 30 years later they have 4 grandchildren.

The live action version of iZombie, the work he co-created, will be in it’s third season on the WB.

Another Fourth of July

Although the Second Continental Congress declared our independence on July 2, we once again celebrate this event on the fourth, when the Declaration of Independence was signed. The most recognized segment of the declaration is of course these words:

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

Ironically, these words were an inspiration to America’s enslaved and free alike. Since the document’s signing, our country has spent centuries fighting over who gets to be endowed with those unalienable rights. This quarrel continues with the election of a President who accuses Black and brown people of stealing elections. Trump sees Muslim citizens as a Jihadist enemy, staying silent when they are killed by enraged bigots or their places of worship are flanked by armed belligerents. He believed the first Black president was a foreign interloper. The President is backed by forces determined to trample the human rights of LGBTQ citizens in the name of religious liberty. Life imitates art?

In the comic book series “Citizen Jack” Jack Norworthy runs for president with the assistant of the demon Marlinspike. It was meant to be political satire, but given current events I’m not so sure. The guy on the floor with a big hole in his chest BTW was one of Jack’s opponents.

The purpose of art is to help us understand and cope with life.

The Katyń Memorial is dedicated to the victims of the Katyn massacre in 1940. It commemorates the massacre of thousands of Polish prisoners by order of Joseph Stalin in April and May 1940 after Soviet Union troops had invaded eastern Poland. The event came after the partition of Poland and the occupation of the nation during World War II. The eastside of the pediment has a bronze relief depicting the starvation of Poles sent to Siberia.
